When building an estimate for customers, you group labor and related parts together, creating a job. By telling a story, this helps your customers understand all the work that go into servicing their vehicle for a particular concern.
In Tekmetric, there are different types of jobs that you can use to build your estimate:
The main difference between jobs is we have normal jobs, and smart jobs. Normal jobs require your service writers to manually look up the labor times and parts needed for a certain repair. This requires them to search through a labor guide, punch out to a parts integration (or even call a vendor) to find and quote parts needed. Building a normal job can take 10-14 clicks, and about a minute or two to build. Smart jobs are similar to any normal job, except instead of manually looking for labor or punching out to a parts integration, we automatically pull the labor times into the job, and allow you to shop PartsTech from within the job, reducing job building to 3-5 clicks, and less than 30 seconds to build. We recommend using smart jobs for quick maintenance items such as cabin air filter, engine oil & filter, spark plugs, brake jobs, etc.
Normal Canned Job
These are pre-saved jobs created by the shop owner or admin. Canned jobs behave like a guide for your service writers because the labor and part lines are essentially placeholders.
Examples of recommended canned jobs to build are transmission jobs, A/C systems, tire alignment, R&R tires, etc.
Once a service writer adds the canned job to the estimate, they will manually replace the placeholder items with the correct labor and part lines for the vehicle being serviced.
To view all the canned jobs available in your shop, you can select the View All Canned Jobs option within the search dropdown menu.
Smart Canned Job
Similar to a normal canned job, it is a pre-saved job that includes labor and part lines associated with the service being done. However, these part and labor lines automatically lookup the specific labor and parts needed for the vehicle on the estimate, rather than the service writer needing to do it.
Examples of recommended smart canned jobs to build are for scheduled maintenance items like engine oil and filter, cabin air filter, spark plugs, brake jobs, etc.
In the example below, the smart canned job automatically pulled the oil filter from inventory.
Smart Job
These are pre-built jobs we've created in order to help quicken the job building process for service writers. Rather than service writers manually needing to find the correct labor times and parts needed for a vehicle, we will automatically pull this information onto the job, and even allow them to shop for the part from within the job, rather than punch out to the supplier.
To see the list of smart jobs available for a vehicle, you can click "View All" on the top right of the estimate, or begin searching on the top left of the estimate.
You'll know if a job is "smart" because of the blue lightning bolt.
Example of a smart job below:
Normal "Blank" Job
These are blank jobs are added to the estimate, where service writers will build the job from scratch (adding all labor, part, fees, discounts, etc). You'll notice, there are no placeholder labor or part lines.
Adding a blank job is recommended for infrequent or rare jobs needed for this particular vehicle, where there isn't a canned job or smart job available for this service. Examples of these types of jobs are windshield calibration, hydraulic suspensions, transmission rebuilds, classic car restoration, etc.
Sublet Job
These are jobs that you outsource to another specialist because it falls out of your shop's scope of work or expertise; however, you are selling the work.
Common jobs that are usually outsourced are Towing, Transmission Rebuilds, Tires, etc.
