Having technicians assigned on repair orders is highly valuable and beneficial for your shop, especially if you have more than two technicians in the back. Requiring tech assignment will benefit your shop in the following ways:
- Allow for better communication between the back and front of the shop.
- Easier for managers and service writers to dispatch work since they can now see each technician’s workload on the tech board.
- Technicians will be able to see what vehicle and work needs to be prioritized, depending on how the manager dispatches the work.
- Track each of your technician’s job efficiency by comparing how long they clock into a job, versus how much you billed the customer for labor.
- Tech assignment will be important for any warranty work that comes back to the shop because you’ll be able to historically view which technician performed the service.
For example, let's say you have a diagnostic technician, his efficiency could be around 80%-100% but a strong R&R technician should have a minimum of 120% and a junior tech maybe 50%-60%. Using this will benefit communication and growing technicians, setting expectations and understanding what you need for future hires.
